WINE LIST FROM OUR EVENT:

2001 St. Clair Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand -OK, so "RB" forgot that it was a California White Night, but she was quickly forgiven after we tasted this very pleasant SB with pear, floral, gooseberry & mineral elements wrapped in one pleasant glassful.

1998 Navarro Sauvignon Blanc (Beth Sheligo) from grapes grown along Highway 128 in Mendocino, this wine showed slate, minerality and the feline quality many of us enjoy in a good SB, despite having 11.3% Semillon. Good acidity with oak showing.

1996 Araujo Sauv Blanc from Eisele Vineyard. Made by female winemaker, Francoise Peschon, this blend of 68% Sauv Muscat, 2% Sauv Blanc and 10% Viognier, this pineapple treat was rich with oak despite only 22% new French oak treatment (Becky Scheibe).

2000 Sebastiani Russian River Valley Sauv Blanc. Nice fruit on nose-gooseberry, grapefruit-and crisp acidity on the palate (who brought this one?)

2000 Fetzer Sauv Blanc from Eccho Ridge received an 86 from Wine Spectator and showed a soft, fruity nose of pineapple (Cecelia Millea)

1998 Chalk Hill Pinot Gris (Deb Denis) only available from the winery, this one was carried back from Cencibel's visit there last year.

1999 Paraiso Spings Vineyard Riesling from Monterey County (Frannie Fowler). Something off that the group could not agree on (petrol, spice).

1998 Qupe Roussane from Alban Vineyard, Edna Valley (Becky Scheibe). Serious tar and richness generated a discussion over the oak treatment on this wine. Becky confirmed none. Unbelieveable! Great fruit and acid, very powerful but balanced. Available at Corkscrewed for $24/bottle.

2000 Acacia Chardonnay (Lisa Presson) this wine, from the Chalone group, revealed banana on the palate and was absolutely delicious!

Trinity Oaks Chardonnay (Anna O'Connell) was a yummy surprise for less than $10/bottle. Soft on the nose and the palate, shows tropical fruit and a creamy mouthfeel.

1998 Benzinger Carneros Chardonnay (Meryle Melnicoff). From an appellation split between Napa and Sonoma, this was heavily oaked and had sweet fruit, a classic California Chardonnay (the group agrees) with good yeasty qualities.

1999 Armeda Chardonnay from Russian River Valley (Jessica Cuesta). A decent buy at $13/bottle, this wine showed sweet fruit on the nose and was full in the mouth with a good acidic backbone. Pear and melon. Good QPR (quality-price ratio).

1999 Flowers Chardonnay (Becky Scheibe) showed a complex nose with tar, lemon, other citrus and sea salt. Nutmeg on the palate, cedar/menthol. This was like a strip of tar wrapped w/lemon rind and not for the faint of heart; impressive Mersault knockoff.

Dessert wine from Beth Sheligo (from two 375 ml) was 1989 Navarro Gerwurtztraminer Cluster Select Late Harvest TBA. Dark amber in the glass but fresh on the nose revealing a hint of spice. 21 percent RS. Raisins, honey, perfect with dessert (grand marnier & chocolate sauce over a fruit tart), Navarro makes the most Germanic wines outside Germany in Beth's opinion, and SHE would know!.

Many thanks to all who took the drive and to those who hosted. It was a wonderful evening, enjoyed by all!
