Glenhardie Country Club in Wayne, PA
The Evening Reviewed, by Beth Sheligo

Through a wild string of coincidences (providence?) the Cencibel wound up tasting 11 sparkling wines by candlelight in a charming country setting, at the Glenhardie Country Club. There was no doubt at the conclusion of the evening that sparkling wine can accompany virtually any food.

NV Roederer Estate Brut – Brightly effervescent, with good apple and pear notes on the palate. Refreshing.
1992 Iron Horse Russian Cuvee – Sharp, palate cleansing acidity, with a very clean finish. Crisp, hard fruit. A crunchy wine.

NV Friexenet Cordon Negro – Simple and straightforward, with muted fruit and acidity well in balance, but not much of a finish. The wine isn’t flawed, but it lacks pizzaz.

NV Sumarroca – very creamy mouthfeel; apple and pear nose and flavors, satisfying finish. A very pleasant sipping wine.

NV Ferrari Perl Brut Rose – Fine bubbles, strawberry and spice in the nose and on the palate. Lite, crisp and clean. Excellent food match.

NV Billecart Salmon Brut Rose – Golden rose color, strawberry/cherry nose. Great body, slightly sweet, intense berry flavors. Cramy, lovely, rich and expressive, with a long finish.

1989 Egly-Ouriet – Big, toasty, yeasty champagne, some thought showing a little age. Very gingery, weighty, solid. Stands up to rich food well.

1995 Paul Drappier – The most elegant wine of the evening. Light yeast, delicate body, lemon citron in the finish. Classy, stylish champagne.

1997 Cremant d’Alsace, Domaine Barmes-Buecher (Pinot Blanc) – Lively, crisp, bracing acidity with a touch of oak. Nicely balanced with a hint of anise in the finish.

1998 Moscato d’Asti Naturale La Rosa Selvetica – Beautiful bouquet of peach and apricot, ripe, juicy fruit on the palate, with a hing of jasmine. Sweet but not cloying, the impression lingered in the mouth. Declared QPR of the evening.

NV Prosecco di Valdobbiadene, Ruggieri – Great nose, clean, crisp fruit with a strong spicy component. Outstanding match with pumpkin spice in the dessert.

Through it all, the wines and the company provided all the light that was needed. Special thanks to Joyce Vecchiolli and Deb Lockwood for putting together a great evening under adverse circumstances.
