Lorraine Reisenbach has kindly agreed to have us back again, this time on the evening before a new show begins (!!) Preview the show, and if they are available, one or more of the artists may be with us. The last event was terrific and we are thrilled to be visiting her gallery again.
Our wine focus is on locally available wines, from Moore Brothers this time, that are candidates for your holiday dinners and other events.
The cost is $20 per person which covers the wines & light munchies. Join us, get some ideas for the holidays, and be prepared to vote for your favorites from the list below...
In the Sparkling category, Bele Casel Prosecco NV
Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Bele Casel NV Prosecco is a style of wine and a grape variety typical of the Veneto region of Northeast Italy, sole protagonist of the best Italian sparkling wines. Made from fruit grown in the districts of Santo Stefano and Sacol (the best vineyard for Prosecco is this, nearer to Valdobbiadene than to Conegliano), the Bele Casel Prosecco is the product of selective vinegrowing and careful winemaking.
Arbois Brut Frédéric Lornet NV
From the marly and rocky hills of the old French wine district of Jura comes this elegant and fruit driven sparkling wine produced according to the traditional méthode champenoise. Local Ploussard - a distant relative of Pinot Noir - provides the fruit for this wine: black cherry-like and supple, spicy flavors are supported by good acidity and completed by a minerally clean, fresh finish.
WHITES
Mâcon-Davayé Domaine des Valanges 2000
The Mâconnais is the lowest portion of Burgundy going North to South (from Chablis to Beaujolais) and a valuable source of high quality wines at affordable prices. Michel Paquet has consistently offered some of the best Chardonnay in the region, with delicious fruit-driven flavors balancing bright acidity and a distinctive mineral finish. This is a splendid example of aromatic Mâcon wine that underwent stainless steel fermentation to retain the natural fragrance of the fruit.
Mittelrhein Steeger St. Jost Riesling Spätlese Troken Jochen Ratzenberger 1997
The Ratzenberger family moved to the Mittelrhein from East Germany in the fifties, and young Jochen Ratzenberger first began to make wine in 1994. His 8 hectare estate, centered around the town of Bacharach, comprises steep vineyards of blue-black Devon slate (especially the Steeger St.Jost and the Posten) combined with clay (Wolfshole). This
wine, clear indication of excellent winemaking skills and wonderfully structured fruit, is fermented in 1 hl oak barrels to a very dry palate of stone, spice and fruit, extremely long and intensely deep.
Ripaille Vin de Savoie Château de Ripaille 1999
One of 100 "Remarkable Sites of Taste" in France, Chateau de Ripaille was the cradle of traditional French cuisine since the mid 15th century, when Chef Chiquart used to prepare delicacies for Amedeus VIII and his court, to be offered with generous pours of the wine of Ripaille. Single-vineyard, 100% Chasselas grapes grown on the stony banks of Lac Leman, where the special microclimate allows for structure and concentration unknown for this variety, this wine is vibrant and slightly nutty, with smoky hints and a pleasant dry finish.
REDS
Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Cuvée Prestige Château Calissanne 1999
A Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend from the sunny slopes of Aix-en-Provence that has matured in barriques, 30% of which new, acquiring great complexity and structure. Vinified at low temperature to keep all its aromatic freshness, this is a rich, full-bodied, multi-layered wine that will match the most elaborated red meat dishes.
Marcillac Vieilles Vignes Domaine du Cros 1998
On the heights of the massif central , the vineyard of Marcillac spreads on chalky clay hillsides where old vines of the local Fer Servadou are hand-harvested each year to make robust, ripe red wine with overripe strawberry aromatics and peppery finish. This special cuvée is made with fruit coming from 80-year old vines and it is matured for a full year in oak and chestnut barrels (which are older than the vines).
Franche-Comté Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes Vignoble Guillaume 1999
Old vine, varietal Pinot Noir grown in the wine district of Haute-Saône, a fairly large region that include the better known district of Jura. This is elegant and velvety wine that combines the mineral and lean quality of Jura with the rich and ample flavors of Bourgogne. The winemaker, Xavier Guillaume's brother Pierre Marie is a world-known rootstock grower who has benefited from his collaboration and close association with some of the best estates in Italy (Isole e Olena, Gaja) and France (Leroy, DRC, Rion).
Join us for the event to vote on your favorite tastes and perhaps find a wine or two to serve at your holiday gatherings with friends and family.
Artists' House has a classical guitarist and dessert/coffee reception on the first Sunday of each month (really delightful. . .take it from someone who is becoming a regular there!).
